Hiking in Connecticut

Hiking in Connecticut is a Facebook page dedicated to hiking trails in Connecticut and sharing your experiences with your fellow adventurers.

In early 2022, there was a logo contest for the group. The winning design would be applied to patches and stickers and other outdoor gear/accessories for sale. All proceeds would go to the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection.

Hiking in Connecticut logo

Brief: To design a circular logo that represents the group with a minimal design that can easily translate to a patch design.

Solution: A simple four color logo with a hiker on a hill and the group’s name prominently displayed. I knew I wanted to incorporate some element into the group’s name, while still being legible. I settled on turning the letter K in hiking into a hiker silhouette. I also wanted the letters to not be perfectly aligned to represent the traprock that haunts CT trail systems (and hikers’ ankles). The soft curve at the top of the landmass shows that the state is more rolling hills than steep mountains. Finally, to cement this as a CT hiking logo, I included a minimal rendering of the state’s outline.
